Tamil Nadu is a land of temples. Various temples of the Shaiva, Vaishnava and Sakta styles can be seen. Most of these temples are rock temples with huge Gopurams and wide Prakarams, with numerous elegant sculptures and paintings adorning the walls and ceiling. Every temple can boast of something unique. Apart from the sculptures on the temple walls, every temple has the Mula Vigraham (main deity) and other side deities as well as the Utsava Murtis (processional deities). Chidambaram, Kanchipuram, Kanyakumari, Kumbakonam, Madurai, Mahabalipuram, Nagore, Nanguneri, Palani, Rameshwaram, Srirangam, Thanjavur, Tiruttani, Velangani are some of the important pilgrim centres in Tamil Nadu.
